OUR STORY

In 2012, the Diabetes Society in Santa Clara ceased operations, creating a void in diabetes camp programs that had long been supported by the Nevada Diabetes Association. To address this critical need, the Nevada Diabetes Association was established to fill the gap and provide much-needed support. Through fundraising efforts and collaboration with former Santa Clara staff, we successfully kept the camp programs running, garnering overwhelming community support and leading to our organization’s expansion.

With partnerships spanning across multiple states, we now offer a valuable resource for children with diabetes to learn essential life skills and take control of their health. By fostering a sense of community and increasing awareness about this chronic condition, we empower individuals to better manage their diabetes and thrive.

OUR EVOLUTION

THE HISTORY BEHIND THE NEVADA DIABETES ASSOCIATION

1980

the Diabetes Educational Center was founded with a mission to support individuals affected by diabetes. By 1996, its reach had expanded to include camp programs, leading to the creation of the Nevada Diabetes Association (NDA) and an expanded range of community services.

1996

NDA launched its first diabetes camp, Camp Buck in Lake Tahoe, which has since grown into multiple residential camps, family support programs, and educational initiatives—helping children and families build confidence in managing diabetes.

2000

NDA received a State of Nevada grant to develop the Diabetes Resource Directory and School Guidelines for Children with Diabetes, ensuring up-to-date resources and support. That same year, Camp Vegas was founded as NDA’s second residential camp. NDA also joined the CDC’s “Diabetes Today Training Program” to develop community-based prevention programs.

2006

By 2006, all camps and services were brought in-house, and additional staff were hired to support the growing programs.

2010

In 2010, NDA developed CampViews, a software system designed to manage in-house camp operations. It has since evolved into Views EMR, now internationally leased by over 550 diabetes-related programs and services.

2017

By 2017, NDA’s camp programs exceeded capacity, prompting expansion. That year, NDA launched the “Betes-Box” to provide lifelong resources for newly diagnosed families and partnered with DOLC and Renown Pharmacies to enhance the Emergency Medical Assistance Program (EMAP). EMAP now assists over 1,000 people annually, providing lifesaving medication assistance and saving the community over $15 million in diabetes emergency care—making it the largest diabetes medical assistance program in Nevada.

2018

In 2018, NDA opened its Southern Nevada office, integrated Dexcom CGM at all camps, and presented at the United Nations on the impact of diabetes camps.

2019

By 2019, NDA expanded its reach, serving over 14,000 people, launching the DKA (Diabetics Kinda Adulting) Support Group, and leasing its CampViews platform to improve diabetes camp best practices. A CGM studyconfirmed that campers using advanced diabetes technology maintained better glucose control. Today, NDA directly supports over 16,000 people annually.

2022

In 2022, NDA purchased its Reno headquarters and resource center at 115 Casazza Drive and launched the Guardian Program, with a goal to expand direct services by 25% post-renovation. NDA also presented its Diabetes Camp/CGM study at ATTD and ADA conferences, reinforcing the impact of diabetes camps on health outcomes.
